guest soaps and sparklers
there is a myth,
that after you successfully survive planning, creating, hosting - whatever - a big project, that the next days will allow you to relax and calmly regain your life.
but in reality, a little rest leads right into playing catch-up gerbil-wheel-style for a couple of days!
but, i'm getting there.

the family party was a success!
we got the house finished and guest towels and goodies laid out moments before they pulled into the driveway. I love the plans that go into making guests feel comfortable and so each guest had their bath towels with a lovely and creamy robin's egg soap, a packet of 3 Maine postcards and a pen for sending off some quick notes to friends, a bottle of water and glasses, and a vase of flowers from the garden.
saturday night was an informal anti-pasto dinner at the house after which i went to a cousins to sleep (my bedroom doubles as a guest room!). But in the morning we were right back here to breakfast and packing to get the hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, corn, charcoal, chairs, tablecloths (etc etc) out to the park. lucky it's only 5 minutes away.
we rented a pavilion with picnic tables and grills that overlooks one of the rocky beachs of the park. several people had brought kayaks and we put them in just down the road at a sandy beach. strangely, it was my abdominals that were hating me after a meander along the coast - arms? fine.
we were thrilled to see cousins we haven't seen in years as well as those who the younger generations have never met. we told stories, passed around pictures, studied genealogical charts, laughed, eat all manner of summer food, ran after children, took walks, swam, kayaked and soaked in the season. it was a gorgeous day, the water was nice, and the best part? it's the beginning of dragonfly season.
success.
